"Saturday Night" was the second single released from the Cold Chisel album "Twentieth Century". The song had just fallen short of the top ten reaching #11 on Australian Singles Chart in 1984. Unfortunately by then, the group had already disbanded.
I count "Saturday Night" along side "Forever Now", "When The War Is Over" and "Flame Trees", as one of my all-time favourite Cold Chisel songs. The vocals are shared between Ian Moss and Jimmy Barnes, and their combination is floorless against the strength of this brooding, bluesy, rock track.
The street sounds of Kings Cross apparent on the album version, has been edited out of this 7" vinyl radio mix. But in the music video below you can hear the original version complete and uncut. On side two is another track from the "Twentieth Century" album called "Painted Doll", it's an upbeat pub rock song with Jimmy Barnes on lead vocals. It has all the hall marks of Jimmy's unique style that would later characterise his solo career.
The artwork on the 7" single picture sleeve was designed by Chilean artist Eduardo Guelfenbein, who is also responsible for the artwork on the cover of the "Twentieth Century" album. Guelfenbein, had previously directed the music videos for Cold Chisels earlier singles; "Hold Me" and "No Sense".
"Saturday Night" I think, showcases Cold Chisel at their very best, and it is such a pleasure to experience the song in this physical format despite any audible limitations associated with older vinyl. It's a brilliant song, and undeniably, a great Australian rock classic that should be included in any avid collector's trove of Australian 80s vinyl music.
