80s-Wizard:

"She Has To Be Loved" was the second single released from the Jenny Morris album "Shiver". The song made it all the way to #5 on the Australian Singles Chart in 1989. But back home in her native Aotearoa, it reached #3 on the New Zealand Singles Chart.

I recently discovered this 45 picture sleeve at yet another local independent record store that sold truck loads of singles. This particular 7" single is in excellent condition, surviving 28 years without any significant clicks or pops to either side of the vinyl disc. It plays smoothly like it was created only yesterday.

Another song from the "Shiver" album titled "Conscience" is found on side two. It's a danceable number that I think captures the essence of Morris' unique style in fusing 60s influenced acoustic, folk and percussion arrangements on her tracks.

The front picture sleeve cover features a black and white photo of Morris and a coloured flower arrangement to the right side of the sleeve. On the rear side is a male and female figure dancing together in silhouette, presumably this grainy black and white still are from the accompanying music video (see way below).

There is also a small black and white photo inset of Morris with her band members centred at the bottom of the rear sleeve. Unfortunately, the photography and artwork design remain uncredited, this seems to be the case with many 80s, 45 sleeves.

Rotating heavily on the radio over the final months of 1989, "She Has To Be Loved" set Australian dance floors a light, becoming a chart topping success and a massive summer hit. It's arguably among Morris' more memorable and most popular songs, second only to her #2 hit single "Break In The Weather" from 1991. Both songs still receive significant airplay on Australian radio today and are considered examples of classic Australian pop.
